The behavior that you described sounds like the Slingbox is trying to check for updates. With the Slingbox 500 on-screen user interface, you are able to check the firmware version of the Slingbox. If the Slingbox firmware is not the current firmware, there is an option within the user interface that will allow you to check for updates. Below are two articles, one that explains where all the options are in the user interface and a second one that has all the most current firmware of each Slingbox:

- Slingbox.com - How to get the latest firmware for your Slingbox
If the Slingbox is running the most current firmware version, you may want to perform a factory reset and reconfigure the unit. Below are two articles, one that will help with resetting the Slingbox and another one that explains two methods of how to setup the Slingbox 500:

I did download the most current version of the firmware when I reset it. did a hard reset and went through the whole reset procedure. I also re-checked to make sure I have the latest firmware and I do. Any other thoughts?
I am having a problem with my 500. While watching the TV that is attached to it magically self starts, interrupting what I am watching and then after a couple of minutes goes back to the TV program. Sometimes this happens multiple times. I have done a full reset and reprogramming but it does not seem to help. Any ideas?
