The "To TV" on the Thomson is connected to the Cable In on the Slingbox
Since I first posted, based on what someone else posted, I connected a coax
cable from the TV to the Slingbox's coax Out, which at least allows me to
change the channel.
I have the Slingbox connected to the router with an Ethernet cable and
believe I have the router properly configured for port forwarding.
The TV that is connected to the Slingbox via coax works fine except that I
cannot use the remote for the Thomson to turn off the power. I have to use
the (Samsung) TV remote for that.
I can view TV in another room on my wireless home network but the onscreen
remote will neither turn off power nor change channels. I can only watch
the channel that was last on the connected TV (but that TV does not have to
be powered on).
Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks. I thought I had followed everything. If not, it's obviously
beyond me. I did another all nighter on this and at this point will
probably put it away for another year or so. Have been working on it
sporadically since September, 2012. (Everything used to work fine.)

I have a Slingbox Pro-HD. Have spent hours/days/months trying to get either an online or a handheld remote to work but without joy. (Custom installations, resets, everything ever mentioned anywhere online.) Have now accepted that it will never happen.
So, in defeat, I ask ... is there a way that I can at least change from HGTV (the one channel that seems to be permanently hardcoded somewhere) to some other single channel?
