Missing arrow buttons on screen  - Roku N1000

    kelch3

I am trying to get my Roku N1000 Digital Video Player working correctly with SlingPlayer for Android. During setup of the N1000 on my Slingbox Pro HD, I had to use the option of Roku Satellite since there isn't an N1000 to choose. Everything works fine when watching from a PC, but on my Motorola Droid, there are no arrow keys or select button shown. The play, pause, etc. buttons are fine, but when I choose the icon to bring up the arrow buttons, nothing happens. Without the arrow buttons, this device is unusable on my Droid. Any help would be appreciated.

          Hi, kelch3.

Thank you for participating in the Slingbox Answers Forum!

The main issue is that the Roku N1000 Media Player is not included on the supported TV sources list. This link will allow you to check the supported devices list. Just make sure to provide the requested information.

Thanks for the feedback ranaleon. As a followup, not only does this source work fine when watching on a PC, I found that it works great on the iPhone version of SlingPlayer. This leads me to believe it is a shortcoming with the Android App. I will keep the device hooked up in the hope that a future update provides full remote control capability.

I am curious, Slingplayer Mobile will often  show/hide certain controls based on the choices made during the  Slingplayer's Setup Assistant.  If you wouldn't mind, would you answer  the following questions?

Which Slingbox   (Classic, AV, Tuner, Solo, Pro, Pro-HD) are you using?

Which Connection Type (Component, S-Video,   Composite, ANT IN)?

During the Setup Assistant  which  did you pick for "Device" Type (Cable Box, Satellite Receiver,   Standalone DVR, DVD Player, Other Controllable Device, or   Non-Controllable Device)?

Which Manufacturer and  Model of the Set-top box did you select for the Roku?

In my case, I am using a Pro HD slingbox. Thed ROKU is connected via composite input. I chose satellite box for type and picked ROKU satellite set-top box.

                                  Okay, I tried

                                  1. Connection: "Composite"

                                  2. Device: "Satellite"

                                  3. Zip: "78759"

                                  4. Provider "Sky Angel - Satellite (USA)"

                                  5. Manufacturer: "Roku"

                                  6. Model: "Roku"

However, I was not able to see "Satellite" under the model.  Only options were "Roku" and "Other" under model.

Okay, so let's give this a try.

                                  1. Connection: "Composite"

                                  2. Device: "Other Controllable Device"

                                  3. Manufacturer: "Roku"

                                  4. Model: "Roku"

...then test to see if you can control the Roku from your Andriod phone.

This still does not work.  It is able to play on my Evo but when I go to select the control pad, the one that looks like a small cross on the top of the screen, the actual pad does not appear so I do not have the enter key which is the main key needed for Roku.  The correct remote does come up during internet viewing and on the iphone app.  Any chance sling will fix this?

Honestly, I don't know.  They aren't the exactly quickest car in the garage if you know what I mean.

Okay, I'd like for you to test something out for me.  I created a customed remote for you.  And I basically took the nine buttons from the Roku remote and replastered them on every single possible button.  Just want to try and check out which part of the remote is accessable to you on that andriod.

Also, I got to know about your phone, make model, os, rooted.  Just to give me an idea what we're working with.  Because these are one of those things that should have just worked out of the box.

This ZIP file contains 2 BIN files.

                                          V1991_PL.bin    for USA (NTSC) Slingboxes
                                          V1991_RV.bin    for non-US (PAL) Slingboxes

(These instructions assume you have installed the standalone Slingplayer on your PC/MAC, as you cannot install Custom Remotes from the Web-based player.  If you do not have the program see http://support.slingbox.com/go/windows-download-desktop-us)

                                          PC Version:
                                          -----------
Put the files into your C:\Program Files\Sling Media\Slingplayer\SBAV\ folder.

                                          Mac version:
                                          ------------
Put the files into your /Applications/SlingPlayer/Contents/Slingbox Setup Assistant/Contents/Resources/SBAV/ (Note that The Contents dirs won't show up unless you do a "Right-Click -> Show Package Contents" when navigating into an app's "Contents" directory.)

                                          1. Open SlingPlayer for Windows software.
                                          2. Connect to your Slingbox.
                                          3. Choose Settings > Setup Assistant.
                                          4. In the Setup Assistant, from the left panel, click "Configure  Video Sources."
                                          5. Click the Slingbox input that your device is connected to.
                                          6. On the Configure Video Sources page, select "Standalone DVR (Digital Video Recorer)".
                                          7. Enter your zip code.
                                          8. Select your service provider, if applicable.
                                          9. On the next page, select Other in  the first dropdown, and Other on  the second.
                                          10. Next screen scroll to the bottom of the Code numbers, select "Custom"
                                          11. In the box type "V1991" (no quotes, and make sure the letter is in upper-case)
                                          12. Click on the Power wait for it to finish loading.  I know the Roku doesn't have an on/off but its just a necessary step in the process.
                                          13. Follow the directions on the next several screens, and click APPLY.

Once you're finished, get accustom to the remote on the desktop.  Like I said, I used those same nine buttons on every single button possible.  Once you've gotten an idea what each button does, try it on the Slingplayer Mobile for Andriod.  Basically, I want to see how and which buttons your SPM client responds.

Hi again and thanks for trying to make this work.  Now on Android I get 4 options at the top of the screen.  The far left looks like a play button.  When this is pressed a VCR type control panel pops up on the botton.  The only issue is that both lewft and both right arrows bring you all the way to the end of a selection table so you cant move from one to the other.

The second coice is the Cross Pad.  This brings up Info, Record, Live, and Cancel on the left side of the screen.  It appears that record at times functions like the missing enter button.

The third choice brings up the number pad

The fourth choice is Misc.  It does not appear if any of these buttons let you move left to right or up or down.

Basically Roku only requires 6 buttons.  The Home Button, Enter button, Up/Down, and Left/Right.

Thanks again for trying to help.  If you need me to try anything else please let me know.

Let me try to explain to you how the remote on the Slingplayer and the Slingbox,

First there's a split between "functions" and "keymaps"  Functions are defined by their respective IR codes.  Keymaps are defined by their associated buttons.  Pressing a button on the virtual remote will send the keymap to the  Slingbox.  The keymap instructs the Slingbox which function to send to the IR blasters.

The Roku has a total of nine functions.

The Setup Assistant's virtual remote for the "Roku Roku" defines 10 keymaps associated to 10 functions.  Each of these remotes has an internal "remote code" which is like a profile.  Some of these codes have an associated skin for the Slingplayer Desktop which makes the virtual remote look more realistic.  For the Slingplayer Mobile these codes also define which buttons will be shown and which ones will be hidden.

The first .bin files I gave you used the code of V1991.  Within the remote file, I also created an association to every keymap with one of the nine Roku's function.  In retrospec, that was over kill.

The next remote code I'm going to send to you is V2010.  If you are still unable see unable to see the arrow buttons with this remote file then that means there's a problem with your OS/Phone not the Slingplayer Mobile.  It could be that your OS is missing certain widget files which the Slingplayer Mobile is calling.

So, as a work around we're going to have you look through the available virtual remote to see which buttons are available and assign them with a function that you understand.  Here are the keymap to function associations that I created for this file.  The defaults are in green, the ones I've added is red.

WOW !!   I thought I was the Custom Remote expert and that post left me totally confused.

                                                      Just a couple of points:

                                                      1.   I had not got involved because the original post stated that the Remote worked perfectly on Slingplayer and IPhone and it was just on the Android the problem appeared ?  if so it must be a problem with the Android so I don't fully understand what you are trying to accomplish.

                                                      2.   Has anyone tried the Custom Remote at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=8337 that I built some months ago ?

My mission is simple, solve the obvious problems people tend to overlook.

The premise is simple.  The virtual remote control interface of the Slingplayer Mobile for Andriod is govern by remote control file uploaded to the Slingbox.  This is the same for any of the Slingplayer clients.  If you look below, you can see an obvious difference between the two user interfaces of the same screen.  Notice on the top screenshot, the arrow buttons are on the bottom, where as the bottom screenshot they're on the sides.

                                                          SPMA.jpg

From kelch3 and mikefromnj's descriptions they are missing parts of the interface.  In order to troubleshoot their problem, I posted a remote which every keymap had an assigned function.  This should have displayed every possible button on the remote interface; however, it sounds like it didn't.  So, now we're going to continue troubleshooting but also give him a "workaround" by assigning the missing functions to a different button already present on the interface.

                                                          2.   Has anyone tried the Custom Remote at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=8337 that I built some months ago ?

It appears that the Roku HD 1000 seams to be a more sophisticated device. So, I compared the .rmdu files of the "Roku Roku" against the "Roku HD 1000 that you created. It appears that the protocol and parameters were different, so I didn't think to test it.

I have the same experience. The browser based virtual remote will work but the Android remote lacks the abillity to move through the menus on the Roku.

Any more ideas on how to solve this?

                                    Thanks

Hello all - this has been logged as a bug and we'll look into squashing it in the next release... thanks!

Well as you can see they still have not fixed the android app for the Roku.  I just bought it today.

eferz my many thanks to you for the great job you did.  I can stream netflix over my droid.

I just moved my slingbox to my roku from a sat receiver..  I discovered the missing arrow pad like everybody else.

I am STUNNED that this problem goes way way back and it is STILL and issue!...    GMAFB.

I downloaded the custom bin files and following these instructions:

This ZIP file contains 2 BIN files.
                                            C2010_PL.bin     for USA (NTSC) Slingboxes
                                            C2010_RV.bin    for non-US (PAL) Slingboxes
(These instructions assume you have installed Slingplayer on your PC/MAC.  If not see
Put the files into your C:\Program Files\Sling Media\Slingplayer\SBAV\ folder.
(For the Mac it is /Applications/SlingPlayer/Contents/Slingbox Setup Assistant/Contents/Resources/SBAV/, and note that The Contents dirs won't show up unless you do a "Right-Click -> Show Package Contents" when navigating into an app's "Contents" directory.)
Now go into Slingplayer and run Setup Assistant and 'Configure Video Sources' (In Slingplayer 1.5 select Edit in the Slingbox Directory then the 'Slingbox Configuration' Tab and the Audio/Video Setup) using Cable Box as the device type.
This time use 'Other' as the brand and in the next screen use scroll to the bottom of the Code numbers, select 'Custom' and then
type C2010 (NOT c2010, the code is case-sensitive) in the newly appeared Custom Code window.
Then complete the setup as normal
it loaded a configuration that gave me the menu keys that were missing..   Why an individual outside of sling had to create this workaround is absolutely baffling.
