Here's what the tech support told me.
BTW - I'm in Kyiv, Ukraine at the moment.
They said that I can't save the reset because I need to be on the same network as the sling or it will not accept the save...
so, I should fly 5000 miles home to make the reset...not very good engineering if it's correct - which I am not sure of...
Unfortunately I agree. All the symptoms you describe indicate that something has corrupted in the firmware. And the only solution to that is a factory reset. And you have to be on the same LAN to do the initial setup. (Actually that is irrelevant as you have to be with the Slingbox to press the reset button for 30 seconds)
My sling has worked fine for three years. Yesterday, the opening interface changed, and although I can connect, my remote was gone...I re-programed the remote several times, doing all the tricks everyone suggests here.
Strange thing is that the remote is visible WHILE I am programing - when I'm finished, it's gone and I'm asked if I want to add one again.
