Buying a Slingbox was a bad decision

I have 25 mbps on the source end and 50 mbps on the receiving/broadcast end. Yet, Slingplayer drops the signal to my Roku about twice every 5 minutes even though I'm in the same room as the wifi router. When it does stream, most of the time it's as though I'm watching TV through a waterfall and the audio skips every 15-20 seconds. I would have been better off just buying cable at my home away from home instead of buying a new Slingbox and a second DirecTV receiver at home. Does the signal travel through Slingbox's servers? Is that where it gets slowed to a few hundred kilobytes per second?
