Why does the video stream pause when a remote button is pressed?

I just got a Slingbox 350. I do not understand why the video stream has to pause whenever a remote button is pressed. I understand the effect of pressing the button would be delayed (encoding, buffering, etc.). But, the web and iOS versions all act like it has to shutdown the stream in order to send the remote button command. I could not find any discussion about this. Am I missing something?

The way I believe it works is that when you issue a command it scraps the existing buffer and starts again but with a smaller buffer, so that the response to the command is quicker.

However, since a smaller buffer would lead to more glitches if the bandwidth dropped for a moment, it actually plays the video from the buffer at slower than real time (say 90%) so that the buffer creeps back up to the target buffer size (about 5 seconds or something).

I'm not sure if I've explained that too well, but I think it works roughly like that.
