I've tried different remotes to no avail. There is even a Genie box listed now and the virtual remote looks exactly like the real remote. So I would think that remote should work. When I press 'Guide' or 'List', I get the message "Your TV or it's cables are not HD" with the added message to press the EXIT key until TV changes to standard definition. The Slingbox Solo the input cables are not high definition. Is there something else I should do to the setup? Or will this never work?
It will probably never work, but I reckon you have mis-identified the source of the problem. It think it has absolutely nothing to do with the Slingbox remote. In fact it probably has nothing to do with Slingbox either. It looks to me as though your TV provider has designed your device so that the menu/list displays are not available on the SD secondary output you are using to drive the Slingbox.
As I understand it, you have tried 2 tests:
1. You use the button on the real remote the TV switches correctly ?
2. You use the butotn on the virtual remote then the Sling picture pops up the error message ?
But there are 2 other tests you need to run.
3. If you have the TV and the Sling picture side-by-side, what happens if you use the real remote ? My guess is that the TV will work but the Sling picture will still display the message ?
4. Similarly, if you use the virtual remote I am guessing the identical thing will happen.
The only possible solution is not to drive the TV and Slingbox from different outputs. Use the output from the device to drive the Slingbox and then the pass-through of the Slingbox to drive the TV.
