I can definitely understand your concern with the communication of the Slingbox. Their are a couple different things you will want to check to help troubleshoot the issue. You want to make sure you have both a network light, and a power light on the front of the Slingbox. If you have 2 solid lights, you may also want to check your firewall/anti-virus settings.
